Federal Efforts a Travesty
"'We've ensured a role for coal," said Rick Boucher, Democratic Congressman from West Virginia, regarding the federal climate change "mitigation" bill that recently passed the House. I'm forced to use quotation marks around "mitigation" because this "deal with the devil," as Ted Nordhaus, of the Breakthrough Institute, described it, confirmed my worst suspicions: even under a progressive and popular President the chance of an effective federal climate change mitigation bill passing through Congress is minimal to none.

Are the Chinese Working To Curb Their Emissions?
Beijing's formulation of the {Alternative Energy Revitalization Plan} is yet another concrete illustration of the determination of the Chinese government to develop a low-carbon economy. It is also a reminder to critics of China's efforts to tackle climate change that Beijing is taking significant steps in realizing that goal. To be responsible in their criticism, those who care about climate change need to get under the hood and examine in detail the renewable energy engine that China is building and avoid the oversimplification that obscures a real convergence of interests.

Can Biomass Replace Coal?
Wind and solar power are clean and free but they only work part of the time. When the sun goes down and the wind dies, coal is still the workhorse for generating baseload power. But coal is killing us by warming the planet, acidifying our lakes and oceans and sprinkling mercury over the landscape. Geothermal can do part of the job but it will take decades to drill enough wells.
