SWANA LFG Conference Over for 2011

I just got back from the SWANA conference and I was a little surprised at how many people were not there. In this day of corporate austerity having the LMOP conference and the SWANA conference so close together one would think the second conference would do more to make the conference attractive. I mean attractive in the technical sense not physical. The Gaylord Texan is a great place for a conference, but the hotel does not determine the success. LFG Technologies to break ground on expansion project!

LFG Technologies has recently been given the go ahead to expand Ostrom Road Plant. We are very excited to take this one engine plant to a 2 engine plant. We should have the plant online with both engines pulling full load by the end of the year. Look for more updates to come as the project gets underway.

LMOP Community Partner of the Year

Escambia County LFG Energy Project (Pensacola, Florida) — LMOP Community Partner Escambia County, Florida, along with Gulf Power Company and LMOP Industry Partner LFG Technologies, launched a successful LFG energy project in October 2010, overcoming the county’s disappointment with the landfill’s initial, unsuccessful LFG energy project that began in 1997. LFG Technologies helped the county to build and operate the new LFG energy facility, which produces 3.2 MW of electricity. The county sells the electricity to Gulf Power, which then sells the energy to residential and commercial end-users.

The project was designed and built to accommodate an eventual expansion to 6.4 MW. Funding came from both the U.S. Department of Energy’s Block Grant Funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and the Escambia County LFG Expansion Program.

I have been in quite a few meetings here recently and the one question that everyone seems to be asking… Why do you do it that way? Well besides the fact that we have found (over the past 20+ years) this to be the most cost effective way to build projects. We build projects to perform and not just work. What I mean by this is, for instance; our Perdido project has been on line for the last 3 months operating at a 98- 103% online time. Whereas we are finding from other project owners they are operating in the 80′s for a % online time. What does this mean to our project owner… $$$ in their pocket. We build landfill gas projects we would be proud to own and operate. We will go the extra mile on projects to get it right the first time. That’s why we do it that way!

LFG Technologies recommends Escambia County for Community Partner of the Year!

Community Partner of the Year: Escambia County, Pensacola, FL — Escambia County brought together a diverse technical team and federal grant funding to develop a replacement project at its Perdido Landfill. Gulf Power purchases the initial 3.2 megawatts for its residential and commercial customers, and the project was designed for future expansion to 6.4 megawatts.

Gulf Power opens landfill gas project in Florida

Gulf Power’s Landfill Gas-to-Energy facility started commercial operations in October, producing 3,200 kilowatts – enough renewable energy to power more than 900 homes.

It is the first renewable energy generation facility owned and operated by Gulf Power, and the first landfill gas facility by its parent Southern Company. The energy capacity can be expanded as landfill methane gas production expands in the future.

The partnership between Gulf Power and Escambia County was launched officially in February, when Gulf Power broke ground on its $5.3-million facility. Gulf Power has a contract with Escambia County for the purchase of landfill gas and with LFG Technologies Development to build and operate the landfill gas-to-energy facility.

Municipal solid waste landfills are the second largest human-generated source of methane emissions in the United States and methane is one of the most potent forms of greenhouse gases – 21 times more potent than carbon dioxide, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Escambia County has a collection system in place and pipes the gas to the facility, where it is processed for use by the specially designed Caterpillar 1,600-kilowatt landfill gas generators. Water separated from the landfill gas will be re-used by the Landfill for its leachate system.

Perdido Project – Now On-Line

We are proud to announce that in partnership with Escambia County and Gulf Power the Perdido Project is online and operational! With Two Cat 3520c’s online and running at 98+% online time. Things are running smoothly. We are generating roughly 1,600 KW of electrical power per engine to total 3.2 MW of electrical power… translation… the equivalent of 900 homes. Escambia County put together a great open house back in late October with visitors from the CEO and representatives of Gulf Power, Escambia County Board Members, key partners & LFG Technologies that made this such a successful project. We could not be prouder of a job well done between all who were apart. With the success of such a project we have learned that some key contributors of the project have already been promoted within their organizations and we wish those individuals great success for the future. Now we are focused in on the operations part of this project and the creation of electricity. Let’s Make it Happen! - Jeff
